Telecoil Guide 

Telecoil is Setting 5 ('Phone') in your ATLAS OTC Hearing Aid

What is it

  • A small coil inside hearing aid that picks up magnetic signals from compatible sound systems

  • Acts as a miniature wireless receiver and improves sound clarity

When can it be used​

  • With phones that have 'HAC'- Hearing Aid Compatibility

  • In public places with hearing or induction loops

  • Personal neckloop systems 

To use telecoil feature with cellphone

  • Select Telecoil setting on ATLAS OTC hearing aid

  • The telecoil picks up magnetic fields generated by phones and converts these fields into sound

  • Turn on Telecoil setting in phone - generally should be in Settings>Accessibility. Can also be listed as 'HAC' setting, hearing devices, hearing aid support. Check phone manual or ask retailer to find this setting

  • Try moving your hand to find the best position. The hearing aid microphones that pick up sounds are behind your ear

Follow these steps to use telecoil setting ​with phone

  • Select Setting 5 - 'Phone' - in your hearing aid

  • You might hear a faint buzzing sound as the telecoil is picking up other signals in the room, this goes away as you use your phone which has a stronger signal

  • Move away from nearby devices like a charger, speaker, monitors, to avoid magnetic interference 

  • Turn on HAC mode in your phone

  • Likely to be in Settings>Accessibility. Can also be listed as 'HAC' setting, hearing devices, hearing aid support, check phone manual or ask retailer to find this setting

  • Hold phone close to your upper ear and try different ways of holding the phone for best clarity

  • Adjust phone volume, then hearing aid volume

Follow these steps to use telecoil in public places with hearing loops​

  • Look for symbol indicating hearing loop availability

  • Move away from sources of interference (fluorescent lights, monitors, electrical panels)

  • Select Setting 5 - 'Phone' - in your hearing aid

  • For better clarity, try moving to a different position — signal strength can vary across a room
